I am a writer, photographer, outdoorsman, bicyclist, world traveler and inveterate walker presently leading a relatively wholesome existence in Washington, DC. I work on things like using mobile phones-for-global development, defending free expression on the web, and leveraging technology to bridge social divides, so much of what you’ll find on this site are expositions on such subjects. There are also a lot of reflections and observations on my travels, particularly through the littoral states of the Indian Ocean.
In times past, I worked in Southeast Asia doing field-based project management for Dimagi, a tech company that addresses public health issues in the developing world. Before that, I was a Policy Analyst at NDN / The New Policy Institute, a center-left think tank in Washington, DC, where I built and ran the Global Mobile Technology Initiative, and did research and writing on how mobile phones, social media and the internet impact global development and democracy.
I am a writer and photographer, and my work has been published in Foreign Policy, Commonweal, the China Daily and other publications. I am originally from Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, hold a BA in International Relations from Tufts University, and make award-winning chili.
